Project: No Child Left Behind
‘No Child Left Behind’ is an ongoing study of Kittybrewster., Aberdeen. This specific area has changed significantly over the last 30 years with the loss of agricultural industry brought through The Northern Mart which subsequently moved to Inverurie, north of the city.
The bank, fishmonger, baker and post office of my youth are long gone, which leave an overriding feeling of a loss of community within the area.
…..as “Kettiebrauster”. It has a Celtic derivation from Cuitan Briste, meaning “broken fold”.…….. Usually, folds for cattle had water near them. Kittybrewster was in the Den now called Berryden, which means watery den.

Kittybrewster is under development again. The proposed Berryden Corridor Improvement Plan, a road restructuring program including the creation of a continuous dual two-lane route, shall have great impact on the area with road structure cutting through the heart of previous residential development leading to the construction of a large roundabout in front of the once grand Art Deco inspired, ‘Northern Hotel’.
‘No Child Left Behind’, is fueled by nostalgia surrounding my youth and allows me to continuously document our changing environment whilst taking note of the threat to our community welfare.
